Chapter 36 Older people are more caring!
Which family doesn't lack food?
When it's time to eat, go home. Don't freeload at other people's houses. This is what parents in the family compound have taught their children since they were little.
Although the kids are a bit naughty, they won't cross any lines on matters of principle. Otherwise, a beating would be the least of their worries; a mixed doubles beating between the boys and girls would be much worse!
They don't want to be annoying kids!
When Shu Yun brought out the freshly fried dough sticks, she happened to see a few children about to leave, so she quickly called out to them, "Wait a minute, eat something before you go."
"No, sister, we're going home now, bye-bye."
The child's gaze drifted to the plate that smelled of eggs, then looked away, before drifting back to the plate again. "It smells so good! It looks delicious!"
Shu Yun saw through the child's seemingly well-hidden micro-expressions. How could Shu Yun let the child leave like that? The child had kindly helped, clearing the weeds from both fields clean. She felt guilty if she didn't treat the child to something.
Shu Yun stopped a child, "Why are you in such a hurry to leave? Try my cooking and see if it's good."
"If you don't eat, does that mean you don't like your sister?"
Without a word, Shu Yun shoved the fried dough sticks into the child's hand. The freshly fried dough sticks were a little hot and had a strong aroma. The child swallowed hard, but being so young, he couldn't resist the temptation of the food. "Then, then let's eat!"
Shu Yun: "Eat up, your sister fried a whole basin of these, there's plenty more."
The child felt much relieved, carefully held the food in his hands, and sniffed it with a look of pure bliss on his face. Shu Yun found it amusing and urged, "Eat it quickly, it tastes best when it's hot."
The child took a small bite, and the crispy crunch filled his mouth with a rich egg flavor. Some of the more discerning children widened their eyes and exclaimed, "There's a milky aroma in this! I can taste it!"
Shu Yun: "Yes, I added some milk. You can eat as much as you want; this bowl is all yours."
Shu Yun placed a bowl of fried dough sticks in the hands of the eldest boy, thought for a moment, and said, "Tie Niu, right? You're the oldest, so share the fried dough sticks with the younger boys. Don't fight over them."
Tie Niu felt he had received a heavy responsibility. He immediately stood up straight, saluted, and said in a loud voice, "I guarantee to complete the mission."
Shu Yun made a large batch this time, and went back to the kitchen to continue frying the fruit. Seeing the children eating the fruit obediently, she felt much more at ease.
After all the fried dough sticks were fried, Shu Yun divided them out. Since there weren't many cups and bowls at home, she folded several boxes out of newspaper, put the fried dough sticks in them, and told the children to take them home to eat when they left.
The children were embarrassed to take food from us. Tie Niu scratched the back of his head, his dark face slightly flushed. "Sister, we'll come help you again next time. You don't need to give us any food."
Gu Jun returned just in time; several children were holding fried dough sticks, grinning from ear to ear: "Goodbye, sister."
Gu Jun: ...You've already become close with the kids so quickly?
Gu Jun stepped aside, and the little ones, preoccupied with their fried dough sticks, didn't notice the tall man beside them. It was Gu Jun who called out, "Tie Niu? You went to collect cow dung again?"
There was a dried, unidentified substance stuck to the buttocks area of his pants. Considering Tie Niu's nature, Gu Jun guessed it perfectly.
Upon hearing the voice, Tie Niu and his friends' smiles vanished, and they became much more reserved than when they were talking to Shu Yun, whom they had only known for a day. "Hello, Uncle. We need to go back and do our homework. Goodbye, Uncle."
Before Gu Jun could reply, the children ran away as if their pants were on fire.
Shu Yun laughed at him, "With such a fierce face, how can a child not be afraid?"
Gu Jun walked into the courtyard, closed the door behind him, and leaned closer to Shu Yun, "Really?"
His eyebrows were slightly raised, his eyes were smiling, and the corners of his mouth were upturned, exuding arrogance and unruliness.
too close!
Shu Yun took a small step back, her cheeks flushing, but Gu Jun wouldn't let it go, leaning closer and closer. Shu Yun quickly used her hands to block his chest, "Okay, okay, you're handsome, you're good-looking, alright?"
Gu Jun was satisfied and gently patted Shu Yun's head. "Hmm, Xiao Yun has good taste."
Shu Yun rolled her eyes at her, and Gu Jun teased, "That's why you were able to marry such a beautiful wife."
But then he frowned, stroking his chin thoughtfully, "However, the little ones just called me uncle but you sister. I'm not that old, am I? Next time I see them, I'll have to make them call me brother, otherwise the generations will be mixed up."
Shu Yun found it amusing and retorted, "You're older than me anyway."
Gu Jun glanced at her. "They're not that much older." Then he added, "Older people are more caring."
Shu Yun snorted, "You're good at saying nice things."
Shu Yun pushed Gu Jun inside, "Are you hungry? I made some fried dough sticks, you can try them later."
Gu Jun always praised Shu Yun's cooking, and it was true that Shu Yun's skills were indeed excellent. After bringing the fried dough sticks home, several military wives praised Shu Yun's cooking skills.
On his way home, Tie Niu couldn't resist eating one. When he got home, Chen Tiejun was already sitting in the yard resting. "What are you holding in your hand?"
"It was given to me by Uncle Gu's wife, Sister Shuyun. She's so generous; she gave it to me, Gou Dan, and Da Bao and the others."
Chen Tiejun frowned, about to scold his son for taking things without permission, when a piece of fruit was stuffed into his mouth. "This is what I earned through my labor. I'll go help Sister Shuyun again next time."
Chen Tiejun subconsciously chewed the crunchy fruit in his mouth, and the crisp texture made him close his mouth. "It really is quite delicious."
Before they knew it, the father and son were sitting in the yard eating.
"What are the two of them eating?" Chen Jianhua asked curiously as she returned from work and saw her husband and youngest son eating with their heads covered.
Chen Tiejun: "Wife, this is from Xiao Gu's wife, Shu Yun, for our son. It tastes very good. You should try it. Your son brought it back especially for us to eat."
Chen Jianhua was pleasantly surprised, "My son is great, he knows how to be filial to his parents."
Tie Niu was very proud and jumped up from his chair. "It's nothing. When I grow up, I'll take care of you all in your old age."
Instead of receiving praise after he finished speaking, he saw his mother looking at him with a sinister expression. His dead memories resurfaced, and he hiccuped in fright, "W-what's wrong?"
Chen Jianhua sneered, "Want to see what's on your chair?"
"What?" Tie Niu turned around to look, his backside facing his mother. Chen Jianhua could clearly see the dried cow dung stuck to the back of his pants. His chest heaved violently. He picked up the broom next to him and chased after Tie Niu. "I told you to go and scoop up cow dung. You're not learning your lesson, are you?"
Chen Tiejun stepped forward to mediate the fight, but Chen Jianhua immediately turned his anger on the father and son, shouting, "Chen Tiejun, are you not going to take care of your son?"
For a time, the Chen family courtyard was in complete chaos, with chickens running and dogs barking about.
On the other side, a small plate of fried dough sticks was placed on the Feng family's dining table; it was brought back by Da Bao.
Da Bao said, "Mom, I met Uncle Gu's wife today. She gave me the fried dough sticks."
Feng Jie immediately said, "How is she? Isn't she particularly aloof, with her eyes looking up at the sky? She's not easy to get along with at all."
Da Bao shook his head, "No, Sister Shu Yun is very nice. She gave us sweet soup and brought me some fried dough sticks. This is the first time I've ever had them. They're super delicious. Sister Shu Yun said that she put milk in them so that they can help me grow stronger."
Yang Yuzhen's baby boy stretched out his little hand, wanting some too. So Yang Yuzhen broke off a small piece and let him put it in his mouth. She said to her older brother, "You eat it yourself. Your little brother is too small to eat it. Fried dough sticks used to be eaten only once a year during the New Year. They use a lot of sugar and oil. Now we're all living frugally, and it's been a long time since we've had them."
Feng Jie snorted coldly, "Too scheming. She just arrived and she already knows how to win people over, not even sparing the children."
