Chapter 38 Wedding Night! Sharing the Same Bed...
Shu Yun opened the door, and Tian Xiufen smiled gently, showing no trace of the rage she had displayed just a moment ago when she was glaring at her son.
"Sister-in-law, what's wrong?" Shu Yun, who had been eavesdropping all night, felt quite uncomfortable facing the person in question, experiencing a sense of disconnect.
Tian Xiufen handed over a jar of pickled vegetables. "Hey, didn't you give Gou Dan some fried dough sticks? I tried some too. There must be a lot of good stuff in it. I could tell as soon as I tasted it. I don't have anything else here right now, so I'll just give you some homemade pickled vegetables to try."
"Sister-in-law, you're too kind. Gou Dan is a very good boy. He even helped me weed today. He earned this by working hard."
Tian Xiufen stuffed a large jar into Shu Yun's arms, "How could I not know how much he, a child, can do? This pickled vegetable is not worth much money, but it is crisp and tender and goes well with rice. Take it and eat it. If you like it, just ask your sister-in-law for more."
The dried gongcai (a type of dried vegetable) is placed in a glass jar, and you can still see a layer of chili oil floating on top, which tells you that it is made with high-quality ingredients.
Tian Xiufen's enthusiasm made it difficult for Shu Yun to refuse. She called out to the inside, "Gu Jun, bring me some fried dough sticks."
Tian Xiufen: "No, you haven't finished the food you gave Gou Dan yet. You don't need it. Keep it for yourselves."
She was about to leave, but Shu Yun stopped her. "Take some. It's my first time cooking, and I don't have any experience. It's just me and Gu Jun at home, so we can't finish it all. And things don't keep for long; they'll go bad and be a waste."
While they were talking, Gu Jun had already brought out a bowl. Shu Yun pushed the bowl to Tian Xiufen, saying, "It's only fair. I'll need your help a lot more often in the future, so please don't be shy."
Tian Xiufen accepted it, but still said shyly, "Xiaoyun, you're too kind."
After the two talked for a while, Tian Xiufen left. Just as Shu Yun was about to close the gate, she saw the gate of her neighbor's house, which was separated from hers by a small path, open. An elderly woman smiled, her face full of wrinkles. "Hello, are you a new neighbor? My surname is Jiang. You can call me Grandma Jiang."
Shu Yun nodded politely, "Hello, Grandma Jiang, my name is Shu Yun."
After she finished her introduction, she saw that Granny Jiang was still smiling at her, which made her feel uneasy late at night. She took a few steps back and said, "Well then, I'll go back first. I still have a lot of housework to do."
Shu Yun smiled and closed the door, not seeing the old woman Jiang's face darken the moment she closed it.
She stared blankly at the closed door, then heard her daughter-in-law calling from inside. She spat and went inside, cursing.
“What’s wrong with the new family that moved in next door? They have no manners at all. I greeted them, but they didn’t even acknowledge me. I saw them give Tian Xiufen’s family a big bowl of fried dough sticks, but I didn’t get anything when I came here. Do they look down on us?”
Old Mrs. Jiang had slanted, triangular eyes and a sharp, mean expression.
"I think... I don't think so," the woman lying on the bed answered cautiously. She was also afraid of her mother-in-law!
Gu Jun saw Shu Yun come in and asked, "Who is it?"
"Our neighbor on the right, surnamed Jiang, seems a bit strange. He just kept smiling at me, which was a little creepy." Shu Yun didn't say that she felt the man's smile was particularly fake; it was probably what a forced smile looked like.
Gu Jun didn't ask any further questions. "If you don't like someone, you don't have to be with them. There's no need to force yourself." He poured the boiled water into the thermos. "The water's ready. Do you want to take a shower first?"
"Huh? You go ahead and shower." Shu Yun finally realized what was going to happen that night, and her voice became stammering. She pretended to pick up a book and read it, but her ears were always perked up, listening for any sounds. She only relaxed a little when she heard Gu Jun close the door.
She took a few deep breaths, trying to reassure herself: It's okay, we're already husband and wife, it's normal for something to happen, and besides, Gu Jun isn't bad at all.
Although Shu Yun was attracted to Gu Jun's handsome appearance and good physique, she was a complete novice in both her past and present lives, with absolutely no practical experience. It was impossible for her not to be nervous when the moment came.
No matter how much effort I put into building, my mind remains in turmoil. I absentmindedly turn a page, without actually reading a single word.
"Go take a shower, the hot water is ready for you."
Not long after, Gu Jun returned, still damp with sweat. He was wearing a faded white undershirt and shorts, the water still clinging to his body, revealing his well-defined muscles.
Shu Yun's mind went blank for a moment. She glanced at the book, quickly looked away, slammed the book shut, and hurriedly grabbed her toiletries before leaving.
Gu Jun sat on the edge of the bed, drying his hair with a towel. The towel covered his eyebrows and eyes, revealing only his taut jawline.
Both of them were a bit too tense.
The door clicked open again, and Shu Yun walked in sideways. When she saw Gu Jun looking at her, she suddenly stammered, "I, I forgot to take, I forgot to take my clothes." Shu Yun ran into the bedroom, quickly grabbed her underwear from the drawer, and left without stopping, not daring to look at Gu Jun once more.
Gu Jun watched her fleeing figure, paused in drying his hair, chuckled softly after a long while, and then let out a heavy sigh.
After taking a shower, Shu Yun lingered outside for a long time, hesitant to step into the bedroom.
"Xiaoyun, are you done?" Gu Jun urged. Shuyun took a deep breath and tried to calm herself down, but she still felt like her heart was going to jump out of her chest. "Coming, coming."
She slowly pushed open the door, and as soon as she looked up, she met Gu Jun's gaze. His aggressive look made Shu Yun's scalp tingle. She pressed her back against the door, feeling a sense of cowardice as if she were about to run away at any moment.
The next second, Gu Jun looked away. He leaned against the headboard, the wall lamp was on, and he was engrossed in reading a military book.
Shu Yun felt her stiff body regain its mobility, and she quietly sat down at the dressing table, trying not to disturb Gu Jun in the slightest.
She let down her hair, untied the braids, and let the curls set after a day of braiding. Her thick, glossy hair, like seaweed, cascaded over her shoulders, obscuring her fair skin. Her snow-white neck was also faintly visible through the thick strands of hair, and a few wisps of hair fell across her forehead. In the dim light, she looked charming and alluring.
Gu Jun's throat tightened, and he forced his attention to the book. A short while later, he smelled a sweet fragrance. A small corner of the bed dipped down, and Shu Yun, with only a corner of the blanket lifted, nestled on the edge of the bed, wrapping herself up tightly in the blanket, with only her head showing.
Gu Jun asked in a low, hoarse voice, "Are you going to sleep?"
Shu Yun's eyelashes trembled slightly, and Gu Jun heard her give a soft "hmm," which felt like a signal, and sparks ignited in his heart.
Gu Jun pulled the cord to turn off the light, plunging the bedroom into darkness. Only a dim moonlight shone through one of the windows, allowing one to make out the general outline of the room.
The room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Shu Yun's cold little hand was grasped by a pair of warm, large hands. Shu Yun's heart skipped a beat. She pursed her lips and didn't say anything, but she gripped the large hand back.
Gu Jun rolled over and climbed on top of her. Even with her eyes closed, Shu Yun could feel the man's gaze fixed on her from above, his scent carrying the fragrance of soap as he slowly approached.
"Ouch!" In the darkness, Shu Yun suddenly opened her eyes. Her lower abdomen contracted, and the intense, ever-increasing pain made her curl up.
She didn't know whether she was more disappointed or relieved.
