Chapter 9 Separation (1)
Chapter 9 Separation (1)
Xie Yaolin sighed as he puffed on his pipe, "It's better that they broke up! Don't go to the Luo family for anything anymore. Luo Ning is in jail, they're in a bad mood, and they don't have anything to give!"
The old lady was displeased upon hearing this, and pouted, "Why shouldn't I take it? Luo Baiwan promised me back then! No matter how much trouble that little hussy Luo Ning causes, it won't matter. What belongs to the Luo family is mine!"
She can't shirk her responsibility to separate the family. If the Luo family doesn't support their large family again, she'll kill herself in front of them.
Xie Yaolin was worried. Luo Ning was a formidable woman, and his wife was likely to suffer.
At the town's police station, Luo Ning was taken by the police to give a statement.
Liu Chunsheng handed the petty thief to his colleague, then led Xie Chang'an to the next room, casually closing the door behind him. "What do you want to ask?"
He broke out in a cold sweat from Xie Chang'an's gaze as he interrogated prisoners. He had been afraid of Xie Chang'an since he was a child, especially after Xie Chang'an joined the army. His menacing aura was unstoppable, and it made him feel uneasy.
"Who is it?" Xie Chang'an asked bluntly. Combining his childhood friend's words, he understood why Luo Ning had hanged herself after marrying into the family...
"Uh..." Liu Chunsheng stammered, not wanting to mention it, but Xie Chang'an's sharp gaze forced him to bite the bullet and speak, "That petty thief is a habitual thief in town, and he's our main target for surveillance. He joined the Chicken Feather Gang a few years ago, and their leader, actually, you know him too."
That's the youngest son of the family at the far east end of the village next door, named Jin Yue. That kid's a good-for-nothing, always showing off. He cuts his hair like a rooster's comb, and the petty thief is his confidant—"
Liu Chunsheng spilled everything he knew, and Xie Chang'an's face grew increasingly gloomy.
Things turned out pretty much as he had guessed, and he chuckled self-deprecatingly.
Seeing his eerie smile, Liu Chunsheng felt his heart pounding and instinctively took a step back.
"Don't let her know!" Xie Chang'an opened the door and walked out, feeling a pang of sadness in his heart.
He suddenly sensed a furtive gaze, but when he looked over discreetly, he found nothing.
Luo Ning quickly gave her statement and learned from the police that the petty thief had followed the instructions of the man with the rooster-like hairpin and had specifically sneaked into the village to find her.
The petty thief had no idea where Luo Ning's new home was. He wandered around the village and didn't even notice Luo Ning's house as he passed by.
Later, he became confused and smelled the aroma of food. He jumped in to steal something but was caught by Luo Ning. It wasn't until he was caught that he realized Luo Ning was his sister-in-law, which led to his request for help.
With Luo Ning's massive size, it's hard not to recognize him.
The petty thief had too many cases on his hands, and once caught, he became flustered and blurted out everything, whether he should or shouldn't have.
Luo Ning was absolutely furious. He never expected that the rooster crest would be so ruthless. The original owner's taste was rubbish.
The atmosphere in the police car on the way back was quite tense.
Luo Ning's shifty gaze was, in Xie Chang'an's eyes, a typical sign of guilt.
Actually, Luo Ning was just not used to being alone with Xie Chang'an; Xie Chang'an was overthinking it.
She finally arrived at her doorstep, and as soon as the car stopped, she hurriedly jumped out.
She had gone to town and it was almost dark when she opened the door. Her heart was still pounding. Men's allure is a curse.
Xie Chang'an did not enter the room, and Luo Ning secretly breathed a sigh of relief before going to the kitchen to prepare dinner.
The news that Luo Ning and Xie Chang'an had been taken back to the village by police cars spread like wildfire, and the old lady was so angry that she gritted her teeth.
The thought that Luo Ning wouldn't even let her go to the police station made her restless.
A short while later, Xie Mingsong arrived at Luo Ning's house, shuffling around with snot running down his face. He shouted at the top of his lungs, "Fatty, my grandma wants you to go to the old house!"
Luo Ning took a deep breath. She wasn't angry, really not angry; she had a very good temper.
She locked the door and walked unsteadily toward the old house, pondering the matter of dividing the family property.
She didn't expect any money; with the old lady's stinginess, she wouldn't get a single penny.
That leaves only the land...
When she reached the vicinity of the old house, she saw Xie Chang'an helping an old man walk over. Her eyes lit up, and she ran over to support the old man on the other side. "Seventh Uncle, I'm so sorry to trouble you to make this trip in such cold weather!"
Xie Chang'an was incredibly helpful; given the old lady's personality, she definitely wouldn't give her anything.
But then the village's respected Seventh Uncle stepped in, and now let's see how she tries to deny it.
Seventh Uncle's old face was beaming with joy. He had been worried that Luo Ning would be bullied, but seeing that the girl looked good and was in a good mood, he realized that his nephew had misunderstood. It was always Luo Ning who bullied others, never the other way around.
In Qing'an Village, Luo Ning was nicknamed "Little Tyrant." Relying on her father being the village chief and spoiling her rotten, she was unruly and lawless.
Xie Chang'an noticed the joy in Luo Ning's eyes and was happy as well.
Sure enough, the moment Luo Ning and the other two appeared at the old house, the old lady's face drooped like a donkey's.
Luo Ning pretended not to see it, sniffed, and thought, "Hmm, the smell of sauerkraut filling, and white flour. I'm having dumplings today."
Xie Yaolin immediately got off the kang (a heated brick bed), his attitude extremely respectful. "Seventh Uncle, what brings you here? The floor is cold, come up on the kang!"
"I heard you're going to split up the family property, so I came to take a look!" Uncle Qi glanced at the old lady sitting motionless on the kang (a heated brick bed), then waved to Xie Yaolin, "Don't worry about me, just split up the family property first!"
Xie Chang'an handed over a chair, and Seventh Uncle sat down.
Luo Ning stood next to Seventh Uncle, playing the role of a bystander; the main character in today's family division was the old lady.
Xie Changguo and the others had all arrived, and the appearance of Seventh Uncle made them feel uneasy.
"Since Uncle Qi is here, he can be our witness. That unfilial fourth son is determined to separate from his family and we can't stop him. He's a good-for-nothing who forgets his mother after he gets married. Why didn't I strangle him when I gave birth to him and throw him on the mountain to be carried away by wild dogs?"
If he's so determined to separate from us, then let him separate! My wife and I will live together with the three Changguo brothers.
Now that he only pays half of his allowance, it's simply not enough for this large family. There's a lot of famine in the family, and the food is almost gone. I won't give him this land. That's it!" The old lady shifted the blame for the division of the family property onto Luo Ning and also belittled Xie Chang'an.
Xie Yaolin was slightly taken aback, not expecting his wife to think that way.
Xie Changguo and the other two were secretly pleased. Their mother was really good; this was pretty much what they had expected.
Seventh Uncle's face darkened, and he rolled his eyes in anger. "Third Brother, what kind of mess have you made!"
Xie Yaolin is the third child in his family, with two older brothers and a younger sister.
Uncle Qi has lived to such an old age and has never seen such favoritism. Xie Yaolin, that fool, is pushing away his best son.
Luo Ning's lips curled slightly, and the old lady's heart sank to her heels.
Xie Chang'an's face instantly turned cold. Although he had guessed what the old lady was thinking, he still felt sad when he actually faced it.
"Seventh Uncle—" Xie Yaolin was startled by the anger in his seventh uncle's eyes. "This, I..."
"Seventh Uncle, it's getting late, let me take you home!" Xie Changtai ran up to Seventh Uncle and reached out to help him without saying a word.
Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through his arm, and he unconsciously released his seventh uncle. The pain then disappeared.
He retreated repeatedly, feeling a chill of fear; Xie Chang'an instilled fear in him.
"Third brother, I've figured it out. You can't make the decisions in this family!" Seventh Uncle stood up and made to walk out.
"Seventh Uncle, don't go!" Xie Yaolin was so provoked that he actually felt a surge of fighting spirit.
The old woman kept giving him meaningful glances, but he didn't even look at them. "Fourth son, the one mu of land at the west end of the village and the six fen of land downhill are yours! There are only two people in your family, that's enough. The rest will be farmed by your brother and me. The whole family depends on the land for food and drink..."
"Ah--"
