Chapter 315: Space Upgrade
Chapter 315: Space Upgrade
After Ronan Kendrick finished bandaging her wound, he looked at Evelyn Ford with a slight frown.
"Clumsy."
Evelyn Ford rubbed her nose. "I was just admiring my assets. Who knew the edge of the safe would be so sharp?"
Evelyn Ford felt a little dizzy. She had only lost a few drops of blood, but it felt as if she’d been gravely injured, her body suddenly drained of all strength. She tried to say something more, but a dull ache pulsed in her head, and she fainted.
Seeing the scene before her, Evelyn Ford couldn’t quite process it at first.
It slowly dawned on her. ’I think I’m inside my space.’
The space was divided in two. One half was her storage space, but the other half now contained a new plot of land, about ten square meters in size. Evelyn Ford bent down, scooped up a handful of black soil, and sniffed it. It definitely smelled of earth. She raised her hand to her wrist and bit down hard.
HISS... ’That really hurts.’
When she opened her eyes, she was met with Ronan Kendrick’s gaze. Evelyn Ford threw her arms around him.
"Ronan Kendrick, I think my space... it upgraded."
Ronan Kendrick didn’t understand. Evelyn Ford closed her eyes and entered the space with her consciousness. When she saw that the black soil was still there, she couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
"Ronan Kendrick, my space was originally just for storage. But just now, when I passed out, my consciousness suddenly entered the space itself. I saw a plot of black soil inside, about ten square meters."
Evelyn Ford paused, stunned by her own words. "Why would the black soil suddenly appear? Do I have a second space on me?"
Ronan Kendrick stared at her for a few seconds before asking softly, "How did you first access the storage space?"
"It came from the jade bracelet my mother left me. After I put it on, the jade bracelet disappeared, and a massive, boundless space appeared in my consciousness. It’s probably large enough to hold an entire city."
Ronan Kendrick raised an eyebrow. "A moment ago, your blood dripped onto the gold bars. When you stored the gold bars, the blood went into the space with them. That must have activated the farming space."
Evelyn Ford froze. She took the box of gold bars out of her space. The three bars that had been stained with her blood were gone. An idea struck her. She unwrapped the gauze from her hand and reopened the nearly healed wound, causing blood to flow out instantly. Evelyn smeared blood on all forty-seven gold bars in the box and tossed them into her space. Sure enough, the gold bars vanished the moment they entered, and the black soil began to expand rapidly.
Evelyn Ford estimated that one gold bar expanded the black soil by about three square meters.
"Ronan Kendrick, the gold bars really can expand the black soil!"
Seeing Evelyn Ford’s bloody right hand, Ronan Kendrick grabbed it.
"You can do the rest later."
But Evelyn Ford had another idea. "Ronan Kendrick, let’s try your blood! Let’s see if your blood can affect the space too."
Ronan Kendrick didn’t move. "Evelyn Ford, this space belongs to you alone. My blood won’t work."
"Just try it, Ronan Kendrick. If the black soil needs to be plowed for planting, I don’t think I can do it all by myself."
Ronan Kendrick was speechless.
Evelyn Ford took out another case of Gold. After Ronan Kendrick’s blood was smeared on it, she stored the Gold in her space. To her surprise, not only did the space expand by another ten square meters, but a water well appeared.
Evelyn Ford froze for a moment, then suddenly hugged Ronan Kendrick and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek.
"You’re my good luck charm."
And at the very instant the Gold disappeared, Ronan Kendrick’s consciousness was pulled into the space as well. He saw everything inside: the black soil, the well, and the mountain of various supplies piled up on the other side.
A stream of clear water, the size of a pinhole, trickled up from inside the well. Ronan and Evelyn’s consciousnesses met within the space, and they discovered they could even touch each other, just as in the real world.
Opening their eyes in the real world, Evelyn Ford looked at Ronan Kendrick with anticipation and immediately took out all her Gold jewelry.
Ronan Kendrick cut his palm, letting his blood flow into a bowl. Evelyn Ford smeared the blood onto the Gold, then tossed it all into the space to continue expanding the black soil.
"Diamonds and silver don’t work. It seems only Gold has an effect. Ronan, I have regrets. I should have kept those few gold bars from a few days ago."
The black soil had already expanded to about half an acre, and the flow of water from the well had grown from the size of a pinprick to the thickness of a chopstick.
After absorbing all the Gold, the space had completely transformed. The black soil now covered about one and a half acres. Evelyn Ford drew a bowl of water from the well; it was as sweet as mountain spring water.
"Ronan Kendrick, I want to try putting a living creature inside."
They stopped the carriage. Ronan Kendrick got out and carried an argali sheep onto the cart. Evelyn Ford focused her will, and to her surprise, it worked. However, as soon as the argali entered the space, it fainted and collapsed onto the black soil.
When Evelyn Ford took it back out, it woke up again.
"Ronan Kendrick, you try."
Ronan Kendrick tried, and the result was the same. The sheep would faint the moment it was put inside and wake up the moment it was taken out.
Evelyn Ford chuckled. "Let’s put all the argali inside, then."
Ronan Kendrick brought up the other two sheep from below the cart. After storing them, both his and Evelyn’s consciousnesses entered the space.
Evelyn Ford took out a mini-tiller, filled it with fuel, and had Ronan Kendrick start plowing. She was going to sow seeds to see if crops would grow in the black soil.
"Corn, wheat, soybeans, potatoes, sweet potatoes, bok choy, and napa cabbage. Let’s plant all of them. We’ll plant a two-square-meter patch of each to test it. If they sprout, it means the soil is viable."
The carriage continued on its way, the two people inside appearing as though they were asleep.
Meanwhile, inside the space, the two of them were farming for their lives.
"Do they need to be watered?"
Evelyn Ford shook her head. "Not right now. The black soil is incredibly fertile; it doesn’t need fertilizer either."
The two of them worked for several hours until the carriage reached a service station. The people there demanded supplies, and only after Evelyn Ford handed over two pounds of sweet potatoes were they allowed to pass.
At nine o’clock that night, Ronan Kendrick pulled the carriage off the road and into the mountains. The road was busy with traffic, so it was safer to hide. After eating dinner and feeding the two horses, Evelyn and Ronan lay down and re-entered the space to continue their work.
"Now that we have this well, we’ll never have to worry about drought or water shortages again."
Evelyn Ford gazed at the newly seeded black soil and slumped down wearily beside the well.
On the other side of her storage space, separated by what seemed to be a barrier, Evelyn could still see the cargo ship and her luxury cars.
"On the way back, we’re driving."
Ronan Kendrick smiled. "Alright."
Even though they were only working inside the space, their physical bodies still felt the fatigue. When she came out, Evelyn Ford was exhausted.
The mountain wind was biting cold. Evelyn Ford snuggled into Ronan Kendrick’s arms and couldn’t help but smile.
"I used to always wish I could bring animals into the space. Now, my dream has come true. Not only can I bring them in, but I also have land and a water well."
Evelyn Ford looked up at Ronan Kendrick. "On our trip to The Southward, we can trade supplies for Gold. Jewelry works too—we won’t be picky about rings or necklaces. We can even give people a little extra in the trade."
Ronan Kendrick nodded. "Alright."
"Tomorrow, let’s build a paddy field and try to grow rice."
"Oh, right, we also need to set aside some plots for medicinal herbs. I want to grow a lot of them."
As she spoke, Evelyn Ford drifted off to sleep.
