Chapter 789 - 506: Summoning [Shadow Demon], Skill Advancement, and New Title Activated!
The damage was low, but it was enough to interrupt the black-robed figure’s casting. This was Soul Oscillation, a skill with a powerful restraining effect on Magic Professionals.
At the same time, Olaf, who had been moving forward slowly, spun around instantly. He bellowed as he charged, "Demon, die!"
The attacks of a Shadow Demon were indeed powerful, but a Berserker Heroic Spirit fears no evil enemy. What’s more, the opponent was already bound by Fang Zhou’s magic, having actively exposed itself on the most disadvantageous battlefield imaginable—a place bathed in red light with no shadows for it to hide in.
Fang Zhou gave the enemy no chance to breathe. The moment he lured his opponent into revealing itself, he immediately summoned two Ghosts to attack. In the blink of an eye, the two Ghosts were in front of the black-robed figure, their claws slashing. Although their direct Attack Power wasn’t high, the deep, soul-searing pain they inflicted could not be ignored.
The black-robed figure clearly hadn’t mastered the Concentration Casting specialty, as his spellcasting was interrupted again and again. At the same time, Yan Yan’s Attack Magic rained down relentlessly, heavily wounding him in an instant.
He couldn’t run, he couldn’t hide, and he couldn’t even cast a spell. The assault not only covered him in wounds but also forced him to cough up a mouthful of black blood. However, the force of his expectoration generated a shockwave that not only momentarily repelled the two Ghosts but also tore his black robe to shreds, revealing his true face to Fang Zhou and Yan Yan.
He had the appearance of a refined and artistic human, holding a pitch-black Magic Book in his left hand and a meter-long Magic Staff in his right. He looked entirely elegant and proper. However, in stark contrast to this image was his eagle-like head and a pair of trembling, broken wings on his back, some arrows still embedded in them.
This was an extremely rare Mad Eagle Demon!
Glaring fiercely at Fang Zhou, the Mad Eagle Demon gritted his teeth. "Damn you, Undead Mage! Do you think you’re the only one who knows Magic and Summoning?"
He pointed at the two Ghosts. "Expel! Expel!"
With a flash of light, the two Ghosts vanished without a trace. The summoning link informed Fang Zhou that they had been forcibly sent back to the Undead Realm by the enemy’s magic. It was a method similar to Fang Zhou’s own ability to dismiss his summons.
But the Mad Eagle Demon was outnumbered and couldn’t catch his breath before two more Ghosts came flying low toward him. The Mad Eagle Demon promptly coughed up more blood, which formed a blackish-red energy shield in mid-air, blocking two soul-wails. Unfortunately, the hastily erected barrier was extremely fragile. With a crisp CRACK, it shattered instantly.
Just then, Fang Zhou’s Skeleton Heart-Piercing Flying Spear arrived, interrupting the Mad Eagle Demon’s casting once again.
He tried to say something, but the Corpse Archers, who had been ready for some time, had already taken aim. With the nearly simultaneous twang of bowstrings, several large, through-and-through holes appeared in the Mad Eagle Demon’s chest.
He glanced down but couldn’t utter a single word before slumping backward.
Fang Zhou immediately commanded, "Careful! Catch him! Don’t let him fall into the magma below!"
Not only would they lose all the loot if he fell in, but Fang Zhou was also concerned that his corpse might trigger some unique sacrificial ritual. Fortunately, the distance was short. The two Ghosts managed to grab the Mad Eagle Demon’s corpse and slowly drag it back with them.
Only then did Fang Zhou relax. He turned to see Olaf roaring continuously as he attacked one Shadow Demon, while the Black Gem Young Dragon Tiamat and other nearby Undead Guards ganged up on the one still hanging upside down in the Void.
This creature’s power was undoubtedly at the Bronze Tier, possessing extremely high Attack Power and impressive agility. Unfortunately, its Strength and Constitution Attributes were pitifully low, making it perfectly vulnerable to this Magic Trap.
It was impossible to tell how many hits it had taken from Olaf and Tiamat, but by the time Fang Zhou looked again, its struggles had grown noticeably weaker. A large puddle of disgusting black blood had formed on the ground. Clearly, it was not long for this world.
Although Tiamat was still a young dragon, as a member of the Glory Dragon Race, her power was quite formidable among creatures of the Same Tier. Whether it was a headbutt, a slash of her claws, or a vicious bite, each of her attacks inflicted significant damage on the Shadow Demon.
However, perhaps due to some special proficiency of their Summoner, the Mad Eagle Demon, these two summoned Shadow Demons were clearly a cut above the standard strength defined for a demon of their type. That was how they managed to hold out for so long while surrounded by so many enemies.
But that was the extent of it.
Once their Summoner, the Mad Eagle Demon, fell in battle, all of their attribute enhancements vanished instantly. With another furious roar, Olaf unleashed a Blood Fury Strike, lopping off the head of a Shadow Demon on the spot. Before the severed head even hit the ground, both it and the mangled corpse dissolved into black smoke and disappeared.
The other Shadow Demon’s fate was even more pathetic. Caught in the Magic Trap Fang Zhou had set as an ambush, it was ganged up on and beaten to death by the Undead Guards without ever getting a chance to do anything. It was an utterly frustrating death, yet not an unexpected one.
This narrow mountain path, bathed in fiery light, was no place for demons accustomed to hiding in the shadows.
CLINK. CLANG. Two short swords, each about a foot long, fell to the ground. They were the weapons the Shadow Demons had been clutching tightly.
Fang Zhou activated his Soul Eagle Eye for a quick glance. They were daggers of Green Excellent Quality, likely worth a good amount of Magic Stones. With such fine weapons, combined with the Shadow Demons’ innate high agility, high Attack Power, and other Skills, a normal Bronze Tier Human Mage might very well have been instantly killed if the ambush had succeeded.
The Mad Eagle Demon’s plan had been a decent one. Unfortunately, he had underestimated the strength of Fang Zhou’s party, and his fate was sealed from the start.
The battle was still raging, but the scales of victory had already tipped irrevocably in Fang Zhou’s favor. With the death of the Mad Eagle Demon leader, the Flame Teleportation Gate began to rapidly collapse inward, vanishing completely within a few seconds. The other demons seemed to sense this as well. With their retreat cut off, they could only howl and roar as they charged forward in a frenzy.
Unfortunately for them, without sufficient strength, mere anger solves nothing. Seeing this, Fang Zhou couldn’t help but relax just a little. He knew the outcome of the battle was decided; all that remained was a war of attrition. And he was absolutely confident that, in the end, victory would be his.
Sure enough, less than half an hour later, this sudden encounter in the Cave finally drew to a close. Fang Zhou’s party had killed over ten times their own number in enemies, while their own losses amounted to nothing more than a few of the Undead Summoned Creatures defending the perimeter.
After wiping out the last of the enemy, Fang Zhou directed his Undead Summoned Creatures and the Flame Medal Adventurer Group to quickly clean up the battlefield. By a rough estimate, during this sudden battle, Fang Zhou’s side had killed over a thousand Black Iron-level Demons—like Horned Demons, Dog Demons, and Ape Demons—as well as hundreds of Bronze Tier Demons, including Slaughter Demons, Hellhounds, Fire-Throwing Demons, and Fiery Demons. There were also dozens of elite Bronze Demons, such as Abyssal Beastmen, Mad Eagle Demons, and Shadow Demons.
As Fang Zhou was slowly cleaning up the battlefield, a notification appeared on his attribute panel.
"You have slain a large number of Abyssal Demons. Your Soul Enemy Skill Proficiency has increased to [Master]. The Skill Effect is greatly enhanced."
"Title activated: [Demon Slayer] (Basic Level). When fighting Abyssal Demons, all damage dealt by your soldiers and Summoned Creatures is slightly increased. The hatred of Abyssal Demons toward you is significantly increased."
Skill advancement? A new title? A brilliant light flashed in Fang Zhou’s eyes, and his heart surged with excitement.
